Fisher House planned for Jefferson Barracks Print E-mail

fisherhousenail.jpgTheFisher House Foundation plans to break ground in late summer or fall fora 21-bedroom facility at Jefferson Barracks that will provide freelodging for veterans who must travel great distances for medicaltreatment at the St. Louis VA Medical Center, said foundation spokesmanJim Weiskopf.

FisherHouses provide comfortable short-term accommodations for families of woundedsoldiers and veterans being treated at the nation's military andveterans hospitals. Since 1990, the foundation has built 38 houses in17 states — and plans to keep building, Weiskopf said.

Commentary - In defense of Wal-Mart Print E-mail

America’s love-hate relationship with Wal-Mart may have reached a zenith this spring when the discount chain won its case seeking nearly half a million dollars from a former shelf-stocker left brain-damaged after a car accident.

The company has found a way out of its public-relations nightmare involving Deborah Shank of Jackson, Mo. But questions remain about how it got there and what this might mean for the rest of us. It might be hard to summon much sympathy for a corporation that rakes in billions of dollars annually in profit. But a closer look might generate a degree of understanding.
