It's a coffee house, a bar, a performance venue and an arts center.

Mosaics on Main Street in Belleville is far too hip and quirky to have been drawn by Norman Rockwell, but

Coffee and a chat at Mosaics on Main
the vibe during a recent visit was decidedly wholesome and small-town wonderful. On the first day of March, which was also the first Saturday in a long time that sunshine and temperatures in the 60s pushed people outside, a couple of tweens dropped in for iced coffee drinks. Whipped cream? Of course.  Two high schools guys sauntered in, and one brought out a guitar and started softly strumming. A group of women came in for a comfortable place to get a caffeine fix and sit and chat.

Mosaics opened as a coffee shop last May and recently acquired a liquor license. The horseshoe serving area is a countertop for the coffeeshop on the west side, and a bar on the east. The art on the walls – textured sign paintings this day – is for sale and is usually by local artists. The main offerings are coffee drinks and smoothies, with Krutas baked goods, specialty pizzas and “ice cream by the ounce: small as golf balls as big as a basketball.”

As Mosaics on Main Street describes itself on myspace, “we're mixing it up. - Live Music - Live Theatre - Live Comedy - Live Art - A venue where everything comes together. Each month we will offer a piano night, comedy night, improv, theatre & music of many different genres.”

Can one place be something for everyone? Mosiacs seems ready to try. Indeed, owner Kathy Mordini says that they “don’t do one kind of music, don’t do one kind of art. It’s an opportunity for many people to get involved. One night we might have 150 kids, and mostly older people the next night.”

Mordini is also the driving force behind the Broadway Center of Arts, which is upstairs from Mosiacs. The arts center came first. It includes classes and workshops in dance and art, theater productions and poetry readings. Again the website stresses that “the arts are for everyone, no matter what age/performance/skill level one is.”  Having the first floor as a performance venue for those who hone their craft one floor up

provides a useful synergy for aspiring and established artists. Mordini is classically trained as a dancer and teaches formal technique as well as classes that are recreational, or just for fun.

A schedule of bands for Mosaics can be found on its myspace site, but stop in any evening. You’ll never know what you’ll find.
